Stop Ageism Rant

I'm am a young person. I know that. Just because I am young does not mean I do not know what I am talking about. I may be ignorant about pop culture and politics, but when it comes to my field in science I am on top of it. I know what I am doing. I can plan  experiments that take months and never have to work late and come in on weekends because I know what I am doing. I can plan things so that I don't waste any reagents (which is vital because they are all expensive) and have enough material for someone else's experiments plus more. I do things in triplicate and with backup plans because I know that things usually go wrong in ways that are out of my control. I get data whether it is positive or negative because I am a scientist. I am great at planning things out and thinking ahead and creatively. So, when someone like me tells you to do something early in the week because others are wanting to use the equipment you will be needing just do it. Don't come to me Thursday night telling me that your cells didn't grow enough  and you can't do the start of your experiment on friday because you had to share the incubator space with someone. You were told that was going to happen. You ignored the advice that was given to you. The only one to blame for that is yourself because you decided that I didn't know what I was talking about. This isn't the first time you have done it either. You keep ignoring my advice this because you have it in your head that I am a kid that doesn't know what I am doing. Your disrespect for me has lead to contaminations, loss of compounds, loss of reagents, last minute overnight shipping of reagents, broken glassware, explosions, and a couple of minor injuries. You are only partly at fault. Those that are in charge are also at fault because they don't step in. They also ignore my advice even though my record shows that I can do my job. So when your mistakes (many of which happen repeatedly until taken away from you) leads to me looking bad I get angry. All this leads to a bad work environment. So before you make your judgment about me based on my age maybe you should see what I can do. I'm trying to train and help you. I am your co worker and colleague. I am not your kid sister nor child. Treat me with the respect I have shown you.
