Speculating on Running???

I have been listening to a lot of audiobooks lately. It's my latest binge (previously it was podcasts). I have been wondering why when there is a female protagonist her hobby tends to be running. This especially seems to be the case when it is a fit attractive woman. This seems to be common across genres. So why is this?

I thought about this while on the stairmaster at the gym and noticed that most of the people on the treadmills were women. I usually am lifting weights but I changed my routine up (meaning I'm injured and have to recover). Running in our society seems to be the most gender neutral form of exercise. You don't judge or make specific impressions on people you see running. Not like when you see a man doing Zumba or a woman playing soccer.

I think these judgements are becoming less of a thing now that exercise is more and more popular. It seems even less of a thing is larger cities. I noticed it more when I was going to college in a small town. I was the only female in the weights room. I received stares and cold shoulders. Most thought I was there to prove something or to pick up someone, not that I was there because I like to lift weights.

I live in a much larger city now and I don't see that kind of treatment here. I usually am the only female in the weights room still but the other people there are nice and helpful. When I'm at the bench press someone usually asks if I need  a spotter, or when I'm waiting for a machine the person on it tells me how much longer they will be. This is new and I appreciate it. I have become friends with some of these people and I enjoy lifting weights even more.

So next time you see the lone man at Zumba or the female at the football field don't judge them. They are probably there to have fun and exercise just like you.
